The Academy of medicine

The French National Academy of Medicine was created by an Order enacted by Louis XVIII of France in 1820, “…to meet the government’s requirements on all matters regarding public health.”

Its status as a “legal entity under public law with a special status”, under the protection of the President of the Republic, was confirmed by the Act of 22 July 2013.

Today, it is composed of 135 full members, 160 corresponding members, and 180 foreign members (associate and corresponding). It meets every week to debate the latest scientific and medical advances, as well as public health issues. Thanks to its 20 committees, it studies cases upon request from the public authorities, as well as any medical, health and social matters that it deems worthy of addressing. The aim of this is to develop and disseminate recommendations aimed at both the authorities and health professionals, as well as the general public.

The Academy’s relations with many of its correspondents and associates who teach, give care, and operate abroad thus contribute to the influence of French medicine at an international level.

The Academy of Medicine Foundation intervenes here as a spearhead of this influence abroad by encouraging meetings and offering them broad visibility.
